Isoko North Local Government Area
Headquarters at Ozoro. The northern council of the Isoko Nation — schools, farms, oil wells and clan stools, bound to Isoko South by language and kinship.
The northern half of Isokoland
Isoko North is one of the two Local Government Areas that make up the Isoko Nation in Delta State, Nigeria. The other is Isoko South, seated at Oleh. Together they are introduced on the Local Government Areas page.
Ozoro is the headquarters and the largest town. When the old Isoko Local Government was split after the creation of Delta State in 1991, the northern clans were grouped here. The council has about thirteen electoral wards.
The people are predominantly Isoko-speaking. Christianity is widely practised; clan custom and festivals remain strong. The Isoko North Development Union (INDU) is the LGA-wide progressive union, under the umbrella of the Isoko Development Union.

Ozoro as a centre
Ozoro holds the council secretariat and the main market traffic of the north. It is also the school town of Isokoland: the former Delta State Polytechnic, Ozoro, is now the Delta State University of Science and Technology, Ozoro. The Film and Broadcast Academy is likewise in the town, and the campus area has an Olympic-size stadium.
Farming, fishing, palm produce and local trade remain the everyday economy. Yam, cassava, plantain and oil palm are the staple crops. Crude oil and gas are produced in parts of the LGA.
How the council sits in the state
Isoko North is in the Delta South Senatorial District. With Isoko South it forms the Isoko Federal Constituency.
In the Delta State House of Assembly the LGA now has two named seats. Isoko North I is the sitting seat, held by Hon. Bernard Odior. Isoko North II was dropped in the 1998 delimitation and restored by INEC on 15 August 2026. It has no sworn member yet, and INEC has not published the ward split. Until that split exists, North I still covers the thirteen wards of this LGA.
The 2006 census counted 143,559 residents. A 2022-style projection is about 196,700.
Traditional celebrations such as the Oyise Owhe festival mark the calendar of Owhe and the wider north.
Council leadership today
The elected Executive Chairman is Hon. (Elder) Prince Godwin Ogorugba, in office from 2024. In April 2026 he presented a ₦15.77 billion “Budget of Consolidation” to the Isoko North Legislative Arm at Ozoro.
