History came full circle on Saturday, 4th April 2026, as Oyede Kingdom witnessed the coronation of its first-ever Ovie, marking the successful completion of a historic transition from the age-old Odio-Ologbo system of traditional leadership to a constitutional monarchy.
The historic occasion saw Engr. Dr. Sir Goodnews Goodman Agbi, PhD, ascend the throne as His Royal Majesty Engr. Dr. Sir Goodnews Goodman Agbi, PhD (Athuaro I), becoming the pioneer monarch of Oyede Kingdom and opening a new chapter in the kingdom’s rich cultural history. The coronation formally concluded a transition that had been years in the making, following legal, traditional, and governmental processes.
This landmark event represents far more than the installation of a traditional ruler. It signifies the realization of a long-standing vision to establish a structured and rotational kingship system that reflects the aspirations of the people of Oyede while preserving their cherished customs and heritage.
As previously documented in “From Odio-Ologbo to Ovie: The Journey of Oyede Kingdom’s Traditional Transition,” the kingdom’s transition was the culmination of years of consultation, legal reforms, and community consensus. The journey traced how the passing of the last Odio-Ologbo in 2025 paved the way for the implementation of the Ovieship system, which had already been recognized by the Delta State Government through an official gazette and affirmed through judicial processes.
With the emergence of HRM Engr. Dr. Sir Goodnews Goodman Agbi, PhD (Athuaro I), Oyede Kingdom now joins other Isoko kingdoms under the traditional institution of the Ovie, ushering in an era expected to strengthen unity, preserve cultural identity, and accelerate community development.
As the kingdom’s first monarch, Athuaro I assumes the responsibility of leading Oyede into a future built on peace, inclusiveness, and progress. His reign is expected to foster harmony among the kingdom’s people, deepen respect for its traditions, and promote meaningful socio-economic development for present and future generations.
The coronation stands as one of the most significant milestones in Oyede’s history—a defining moment that bridges tradition with modern governance and fulfills a transformation that generations will remember.
Indeed, a new era has begun in Oyede Kingdom. Long live HRM Engr. Dr. Sir Goodnews Goodman Agbi, PhD (Athuaro I). Long live Oyede Kingdom.
