Tension is rising in Umeh community, Isoko South Local Government Area of Delta State, following reports that an armed group suspected to be herdsmen has taken over farmlands belonging to local farmers.
According to community sources, the armed group has allegedly occupied several farmlands, preventing farmers from accessing their crops and threatening livelihoods in the agrarian community. Residents claim that those who attempt to visit their farms are intimidated and chased away, creating fear and disrupting farming activities.
There are also reports of sporadic attacks on road users, including commercial motorcyclists, along key routes leading to and from the community. In one reported incident, a youth was said to have sustained a gunshot injury, further heightening anxiety among residents.
Farmers say the situation has led to abandoned farmlands, potential crop losses, and growing food insecurity if urgent intervention is not taken.
Community leaders have appealed to security agencies, the Delta State Government, and relevant authorities to urgently investigate the situation and restore peace, stressing that continued occupation of farmlands could escalate tensions.
As of the time of filing this report, there has been no official confirmation from security agencies on the alleged occupation, while residents insist the threat is real and ongoing.
